Review: Inner Rhythms

1990

By Linda Howe-Beck

The likes of Marta Marta Danse happen all too rarely. And Benoit Lachambre can always be counted on for bizarre ingenuity.

Vancouver’s Lola McLaughlin inaugurated Tangete’s 10th anniversary season, warmed up the crowd, and paid homage to danse technique while playing visual musical jokes with misician David MacIntyre. But Martha Carter’s Inner Rhythms for the lank and limber Pierre Tanquay and a chorus of body slapping funky dancers was the most fun I’ve had at a performance in years. This group made their own rhythms with their bodies - slapping, stomping, jumping, tossing, vocalizing, breathing. They were funny, tender, hilarious, frustrated and thoroughly modern. Marta Marta, makes more than unforgettable dance. Such a company is an antidote to whatever ails you; a real necessity of life.
